As the first major awards ceremony of the season, the Gotham Awards play a key role in elevating certain performances and films into the awards conversation. Some smaller films that might have slipped under the radar in the cinemas are given attention, and put into the conversation for major awards in the coming months. Films like Bisbee ’17, Skate Kitchen, and Where Is Kyra? (which all screened at SIFF Cinema) make this list, alongside arthouse darlings First Reformed, Won’t You Be My Neighbor?, and The Favourite.
