Oceanside, California offers triathletes a chance to race in the region that birthed the sport in the early 1970s in Mission Bay. Oceanside is located at the northern end of San Diego’s North County, which includes the beach communities of Del Mar, Cardiff, Encinitas, and Carlsbad—home to surf, triathlon, and beach culture. Just half an hour south lies San Diego, with its world-famous zoo, parks, and other attractions to fill a spring break vacation. Just two hours away from the local mountains, skiing and snowboarding are other options.

This race offers the one of the few chances athletes have to swim in the Oceanside Harbor, where water temperatures in early spring are usually in the low to mid 60’s. This year we are putting the “OCEAN” back into Oceanside with a beach start and harbor finish.

The run portion takes athletes on a winding journey out to Oceanside’s flat beachfront path known as “The Strand,” where miles of sandy beaches provide a beautiful and distracting vista. Runners then turn into a residential area before looping back out for a grand finish at the ocean’s edge and a chute lined with energetic spectators.

More than half of the race volunteers come from units at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton. The presence of so many men and women serving in the U.S. Marine Corps is always a source of pride for race participants.

The 2019 IRONMAN 70.3 Oceanside will offer 30 qualifying slots to the 2019 IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship in Nice, France.

This early spring race is characterized by humid, windy conditions, though at this time of year, the scorching Texas heat is less of a factor. The surrounding area offers attractions for families, including the famous Moody Gardens with its pink, blue, and white glass pyramids housing a 10-story rainforest, and one of the world’s largest aquariums. If hot temperatures do make an appearance, the Schlitterbahn Galveston Island Waterpark is a popular option. Stay an extra day and walk along the The Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier, explore one of the many museums, take a fishing trip, or peruse the shops along the Strand historic district.

Athletes begin their day with a 1.2-mile, one-loop saltwater swim in Offats Bayou, staged at Moody Gardens’ Palm Beach Hotel. The 56-mile bike course takes cyclists on a one-loop ride along the Texas Gulf Coast, known for its gusty winds. The 13.1-mile, three-loop run is fast and flat, taking athletes through Moody Gardens and along Offats Bayou. The finish is next to the majestic Colonel Paddlewheel Boat. “The course is pretty forgiving and makes the perfect early season race,” says race director Scott Langen. “Many use it as a barometer to gauge their fitness leading into IRONMAN Texas.”

NEW ZEALAND’S ICONIC OFF ROAD SPORTING EVENT

The Motatapu is New Zealand’s iconic off road sporting event. From humble beginnings in 2005, the event is now in it’s 15th year and has grown from 1000 competitors for two events to over 4000 across five events.

The river was named Mota (River) Tapu (Sacred) by early Maori who used the Motatapu Valley as an access route for food gathering and for the movement of Pounamu (Greenstone). It’s history is steeped in the gold rush era of the 1860’s and of course in farming. In 1990 the route was closed by the landowners of the Motatapu Station and now the Motatapu event gives once a year access across these iconic landscapes.

    SKODA MOUNTAIN BIKE

If you are a first time participant, want to compete against your peers or beat your mates, or just want to enjoy the spectacular Southern high country, then the Skoda Mountain Bike fits the bill.

This event can be as challenging or as easy as you want it to be (depending on your definition of easy!). Set in the spectacular Southern high country of New Zealand, there are many rivers to cross, hills to climb and a few steep descents thrown into the mix.

The race starts at Glendhu Bay on the shore of Lake Wanaka, near the Wanaka township, and finishes at historic Arrowtown. Your journey follows a route early Maori used for hunting and gathering, and to move Pounamu (Greenstone). The valley was not discovered by European explorers until around 1862, during the gold rush.

This event takes you on an iconic off road course through the magnificent Motatapu, Soho and Glencoe Stations, which thanks to the owners, are opened once a year to the public for this event (the course cannot be accessed any other time of the year).

They have had top riders such as Anton Cooper, Dirk Peters, Marcus Roy, Kashi Leuchs, Sara MacDonald, Robyn Wong, adventure racers like Elina Ussher, Emily Miazga, Steve Gurney, and celebs such as Bill English and Hamish Carter all come and take part in the mountain bike. However, it is the first-timers, the recreational riders, and the participants that just get up off the couch to come and take part that make up the main field. It still surprises the event organisers each year how many stories they hear back about how “I have never been on a mountain bike before and I have just bought one for the event!” Bring it on!

    Entry Fee: Adult $169

OFF ROAD MARATHON (RUN & WALK)

Completing a Marathon is an amazing achievement and it is made all the more memorable when it is set in such a beautiful location as the Motatapu Off Road Marathon.

The race starts at Motatapu Station, near Lake Wanaka and finishes at historic Arrowtown. Your journey follows a route early Maori used for hunting and gathering, and to move Pounamu (Greenstone). The valley was not discovered by European explorers until around 1862, during the gold rush.

This event takes you on an iconic off-road course through the magnificent Motatapu, Soho and Glencoe Stations, which, thanks to the owners, are opened once a year to the public for this event.

You will go through numerous river crossings, climb some hills, overcome your own personal challenges and no doubt be awe struck with the spectacular views of these southern high country valleys.

    Entry Fee: Adult $159

MOTATAPU XTERRA TRIATHLON (INDIVIDUALS & TEAMS)

The XTERRA Triathlon is equivalent to a Half Ironman distance event that rekindles the pioneer spirit of triathlon by using the lay of the land to determine the course.

Consisting of a 2km Swim in Glendhu Bay, Lake Wanaka, 47km Mountain Bike and a 15km Mountain Run over the historic Miners Trail course.  This is a demanding course while providing breathtaking scenery along the way.

Up for grabs will be limited age group qualifying spots plus Pro spots to the XTERRA World Championships held in Hawaii – what more motivation do you need?!

If you want a new challenge, this is for you!

“This is the kind of race we need to put on in New Zealand. It is the real stuff. That run is awesome; I think the run is heaps better than the marathon. It’s got everything: roads, tracks, down hills, grass, and river crossings. Central Otago high country – it can’t get any better.”– Axel Reiser (2011 winner).

    Entry Fee: Adult Individual $249 | Adult Team (2 or 3) $304

The New Zealand marathon takes place in early March each year in the picturesque setting of Lake Taupo.

The Ironman triathlon is for me one the very pinnacles of sporting achievement, with a remarkable level of training and dedication required to be able to even think about participating. Many people regard the marathon as a good measure of excellent fitness, but the triathlon takes this onto another level altogether, with the 26.2 mile marathon distance run preceded by a 2.4 mile swim and 112 mile bicycle ride!

I’ve always liked the idea of participating in a triathlon and still harbour ambitions of taking part one day, but I think I would have to build up to it gradually, perhaps by starting the with half-distance 70.3 version – I have managed a half-marathon before and cycled over relatively long distances so it’s only really the swim part that would put me off – if it was in a pool I would be OK, but the added effort required to get across choppy open waters is pretty intimidating I have to admit.

In terms of location, then the New Zealand Ironman has to be one of the best to choose (it is actually the second oldest in the world) with the backdrop provided by the beautifully scenic Great Lake Taupo, a 238 square mile expanse of water located on the north island. It is a popular region for sporting events, with cycling a particular favourite, and the ironman weekend always brings out decent crowds of spectators to cheer on the competitors. February is of course still summer time in New Zealand, so the weather is usually pretty decent for the event, although the athletes will be hoping for cooler temperatures.
